Birth Injuries and Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy occurs in approximately two to four of every one thousand births in the United States and Europe. It is thought that cerebral palsy is caused by a lack of oxygen to the infant’s brain during child birth. In some instances, the condition is caused by medical negligence on the part of healthcare workers. There are many factors that may lead to a child born with cerebral palsy or other birth injuries such as:
– failure to diagnose and treat maternal infections during pregnancy
– failure to properly monitor fetal heart rate
– failure to treat a prolapsed umbilical cord
– failure to timely schedule a cesarean section when the baby is too large to pass through the birth canal
– negligence and unreasonable mistakes in using instruments like vacuum and forceps in performing a delivery

These are preventable and tragic medical errors that have permanent, life-altering effects on a baby.
