Brachial Plexus Injuries
The brachial plexus is the network of nerves that sends signals from your spine to your shoulder, arm and hand. A brachial plexus injury occurs when these nerves are stretched, compressed, or in the most serious cases, ripped apart or torn away from the spinal cord.
Complications in the birthing process may result in permanent injuries to the infant. Injuries such as trauma to the brachial plexus may occur when excess pressure is placed on the baby’s arm or should in an attempt to extricate the fetus from the birth canal.
Brachial plexus injuries may also occur from auto or motorcycle accidents. Severe brachial plexus injuries can leave your arm paralyzed, with a loss of function and sensation. Surgical procedures such as nerve grafts, nerve transfers or muscle transfers can help restore function.
Brachial plexus injuries that occur during childbirth may be a result of medical malpractice. If a loved one has suffered such an injury during birth, you should contact one of our experienced birth injury lawyers immediately for a consultation to determine and protect your legal rights.
