Infection Leads to Amputation and Medical Malpractice Lawsuit
A 48-year-old California man has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Sutter Memorial Hospital for failing to diagnose and treat Methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infection that can be typically treated with antibiotics if detected early.
According to the lawsuit, the hospital and its doctors failed to properly diagnose the infection which led to the amputation of his hands and legs. Ironically, the same hospital had treated the man’s 11-year-old son for the same infection but failed to recognize the signs and symptoms in the father.
Infections can be routinely treated effectively if diagnosed in a timely fashion and treated with the proper course of antibiotics. In these cases, the infection is sometimes misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all and in other cases, the infection is treated with the wrong course of antibiotic. A culture of the infection must be taken in order to determine the proper course of treatment. When doctors fail to provide these basic medical treatments, medical malpractice may be involved.
