NFL Player Sues Surgeon, Alleging Fraud and Malpractice
Former Ohio State and NFL running back Chris “Beanie” Wells has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against several Ohio doctors for fraud and medical malpractice related to an Achilles tendon injury he suffered in October 2013 during a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens. According to one media report, “Wells accused his original surgeon, Dr. Gregory Berlet of Westerville and a consultant to the Ohio State Athletic Department, of botching the tendon surgery in October, and misleading him to believe the surgery had been a success, according to the lawsuit filed in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.” In the medical malpractice lawsuit, Wells accuses Dr. Berlet of concealing from Wells that his Achilles was not repaired or intact, but rather was structurally compromised and in danger of a complete rupture. As in all medical malpractice cases, now that the lawsuit has been filed, evidence will be gathered, experts will be hired who will analyze the medical records to determine if a standard of care was breached in this particular instance.
