Ohio Jury Returns $910,000 Verdict in Surgical Negligence Case
A Lake County Ohio jury returned a verdict against a doctor and hospital for medical negligence last month. The verdict of $910,000 is thought to be the largest medical malpractice verdict in the county’s history.
The malpractice case involved a 43-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Her doctor performed a colon resection but failed to remove a surgical towel from her abdomen. The surgical towel was 24 inches by 12 inches.
The jury found that the towel left in the patient’s abdomen caused a great amount of suffering that is permanent in nature.
